Intro: Game Theme
It seems like every day, another classic slot is remade with Megaways in mind. We expected the trend to slow down at some point. However, players clearly like revisiting old games with new systems in play, and developers are happy to provide! The latest title to be given a makeover is Reel King Megaways. The original release by GreenTube was already remade once as Reel King Mega, which we had the pleasure of revisiting recently. Available special features include cascading reels, golden reels and their attached bonuses and a free spins round.
Unfortunately, we do not get much in the way of visual upgrades here. In fact, this slot does its best to stay as true to the graphics of the original as possible. That means the light blue background image makes a return. Little patterns keep it from looking boring, but it still lags behind other games that launched in 2020. Apart from upscaling the symbol designs and background to look better on larger screens, there are not any visual changes. Great for existing fans of this release, but newer players might decide to skip it because of that.

How it Works
You play Reel King Megaways on a six-reel board with up to 117,649 ways to win. The number of ways to win changes with every spin due to the Megaways system constantly changing the height of the reels. In order to win, players need to find three or more matching icons next to one another. All winning combinations must start with the leftmost reel, or the relevant cash prize will not be granted. The user interface has been customised to be easy to use on both desktop and mobile devices. We can spin the reels, set up Auto Play, change our bet, and open the options menu. Players can bet as little as £0.20 or as much as £20 per spin. An awesome betting range, considering how many ways to win you get!
Symbol designs are higher quality versions of the icons we used to see in the original Reel King. On the playing field, we can see a variety of playing card royals, watermelons, plums, cherries and a sack full of golden coins. The playing card royals were also given some extra decoration in the form of shields and crowns to make them stand out. A jester’s hat serves as a Wild, and can substitute for any other symbol. There are no other special icons in the slot.
As is standard with many Megaways titles, cascading reels are in effect. Symbols that form a winning combination will disappear from the reels, leaving behind empty spaces. Existing icons will then fall down to fill these empty areas. Meanwhile, brand new symbols will appear from the top of the reels, ensuring the reels are always full. This allows players to land several wins for the price of a single spin.
Every spin, between zero and six reels will turn gold and let off a loud Ding sound. Dings occur from left to right consecutively, meaning reels cannot be skipped. Each subsequent cascade turns one extra reel yellow, bringing you one-step closer to activating a special feature. Covering all six reels activates the Reel King special feature. One or two additional cascades after all six reels are golden will unlock the Super King or Mega King bonuses, respectively.
Upgrading to higher ranks of Reel King is important, as it gives you an opportunity to land additional free spins. Depending on which special feature you activated, you can look forward to additional Reel King mini-slots and a bigger number of free spins. The minimum caps at fifteen, while the maximum goes up to twenty-five free spins.
What is shared between all three special features is the progressive multiplier during free spins. It starts at 1x, and increases by one for every cascading reel. If you get six lit reels, you can win up to three extra free spins and a multiplier increase up to +3.
Reel King Megaways is very much designed as a love letter to the original slot. If you adored GreenTube’s 2014 game, then this one will be right up your alley. It sticks to similar visuals while adjusting its gameplay to fit the new Megaways system. The results are self-evident. It has a medium variance, and an above average RTP of 96.23%. It also offers a huge jackpot worth 12,500x your total stake. Making it an absolute must-play for fans of Megaways releases!
