Intro: Game Theme
If there is one thing we have to praise Gamomat for, it is that they do not chase trends. Their theme choices are always interesting for us. Even if they do create something more commonplace, they put their own twist on it. This comes ahead in their latest slot, called Old Fisherman! Help the old man capture the mighty king salmon, and you will receive a free spins round as a thank you. You can also use two gamble options to enhance your wins after winning.
The background image is done very stylishly. It gives us a perfect idea of where the protagonist of this game lives. Far away from civilization, with steep hills and forests on one side and a vast sea on the other. What other hobbies is a man who guards the lighthouse to have but fishing? It is the perfect place to kick back, relax, and let the worries of the world melt away. If you ever want some action, you just get aboard your trusted boat and sail out into the sea! The gorgeous background image is further enhanced by interesting symbol designs.

How it Works
You play this release on a five-reel board with twenty paylines. You can change the number of active paylines between ten and twenty. However, you cannot choose paylines between ten and twenty, and you cannot go below ten paylines either. Wins are formed by collecting three or more matching icons next to one another. All winning combinations must start with the leftmost reel, and follow an active payline to grant a cash prize. The control panel is easy to navigate thanks to Gamomat colour-coding similar buttons together. Spins and Auto Play are both green, just like the buttons for changing the number of active paylines and your wager are orange. Max Bet is the only purple button, ensuring you will not click it by accident. The blue button opens the paytable, and an info page if you click the small letter i. You can wager between £0.10 and £12 on each spin.
Symbol designs are a mixture of playing card royals and unique, theme relevant icons. Playing card royals immediately stand out, which we are not huge fans of. Furthermore, they are not even unique to Old Fisherman. These symbols are borrowed from other slots by the same developer. They do not match the theme, and they are lazy. We simply cannot approve of that. The remaining icons are unique, and look quite nice. We have a compass, a smoking pipe, barrels of equipment and a wooden ship. The old man is a Wild, while the king salmon serves as a Scatter.
Collect three, four or five Scatters to win five, six or seven free spins, respectively. While the bonus is active, it is possible to win additional free spins by drawing more Scatters. In this game, the Wild can substitute for the Scatter. However, the Wild can only appear on reels two, three, four and five.
After a win, you can choose one of two gambles. Card gamble is very easy to play. You have a facedown card, and you need to guess what colour it will be. Picking correctly will double your funds, but choosing wrong means that initial win disappears as well. You can mitigate this by halving the initial win. There is no limit on how many times you can press the half wager button, either.
Meanwhile, the Ladder gamble is all about timing. Your wager is placed on a ladder, and the highlighted area will swap between a position above or below your bet. If you press the button while it is above, you advance. Press while it is below and you fall down, getting a smaller bet. If the highlighted area falls all the way to the bottom of the ladder, you lose everything! You can decide to collect at any time. The Ladder gamble is not available for large wins.
We thoroughly enjoyed the time we spent with Old Fisherman. This release is a touch too simple for our liking, but it is a breath of fresh air. Especially when you compare it to so many feature heavy slots released recently. Our only major annoyance are the playing card royals. Everything else is top notch! If you want something simple but fun, then we wholeheartedly recommend trying this game out.
