Intro: Game Theme

Sherlock Holmes is a name that needs no introduction. The famed detective’s stories remain popular to this day, and have inspired many TV shows, movies and video games. Of course, more Sherlock mysteries are something we always like. As a result, when Yggdrasil launched Holmes & The Stolen Stones in 2015, we were immediately hooked! Get your hats on, detectives. There is a mystery to crack and a fantastic reward to unlock! Do you have what it takes to earn it?

We quite like the theme and graphics, even if Yggdrasil did not go all out on the visuals. There are quite a few background images. A corridor with two doors in them that open to lead you elsewhere. There is also a cool room full of statues and paintings on the wall. Finally, you get to investigate a warehouse full of crates and barrels! Animations look quite cool, but most of them are reserved for screen transitions. There are a few icon animations that look really cool, but they can be quite rare. Overall, the visuals it offers are great, even with a few obvious limitations. We do not think they hold the slot back, but we would like to see it improved in future titles.

Short Summary

  • RTP: 96,80%
  • Betting Range: £0.20 – £40
  • Max Win: Progressive Jackpots

How it Works

You play this game on a five-reel board with 20 fixed paylines. Players cannot turn paylines on or off to adjust their wager. The only way to change your stake is to alter your coin value. You earn wins by collecting three or more identical symbols in adjacent positions, which must start with the leftmost reel. As long as these conditions are met and the winning combination follows an active payline, the prize will be awarded. The control panel is sleek and easy to use. You can use it to change your bet, spin the reels, set up Autoplay and play Max Bet. Click the small plus button to open the paytable, look at the rules or change your settings. You can wager between £0.20 and £40 on each spin.

One of the things that give this release its charm are the icon designs. The ‘stolen stones’ featured here are shaped like playing card suits. Diamonds, clubs, spades and aces look positively luxurious, and we really like how they look. High value symbols include a magnifying glass, a large tome, and two men. Judging by their general demeanours, we believe these are Doctor Watson and Sherlock Holmes, respectively! A golden lock serves as a Scatter, and is used to trigger free spins. There is also a more basic lock, which you use to activate a bonus game.

Bonus Rounds

Collect three or more bonus rounds to activate the Bonus special feature. In it, you pilfer through a room full of crates to find coins or diamond shards. The shards you find will be sent to the main game after you complete the extra round. Meanwhile, the coin bags grant cash prizes when found! You can win additional prizes by activating this bonus with four or five bonus icons. The special feature ends when you find a smoke bomb in one of the crates.

Find three or more Scatters to trigger a free spins round. No matter how many Scatters you get, you will always receive ten free spins. Instead, the extra Scatters award a cash prize when collected. During free spins, all wins are multiplied by 3x. Another way to activate free spins is to collect five gem shards of the same colour.

Every time you collect five gem shards of the same colour, you score one diamond. Each reel has a different coloured gem. When you eventually form five diamonds for one reel, you win the progressive jackpot for that particular reel. Each reel has a different local progressive jackpot, which requires a lot of effort to unlock.

Verdict

Holmes & The Stolen Stones is one of the best iterations of Sherlock in slots we have ever seen. Though we would like to see the visuals somewhat improved, it has an undeniable charm that make it an incredible experience. Having said that, there is no denying that gameplay is this game’s stronger side. The available special features are basic, but are enhanced thanks to the progressive jackpots. Each time you activate the two bonuses, you come one step closer to creating diamonds. If you enjoy slots with progressive elements, then you should definitely check this Yggdrasil release out!
