Intro: Game Theme
Released simultaneously on mobile and Flash, Eye of the Kraken saw the light of day in 2017. Not a classic 3-reeler by any means, the game takes on the theme of underwater exploitations and encountering the Kraken, a fictional sea monster that looks like a giant octopus with long and menacing tentacles. The creature originates from Scandinavian folklore, dwelling off the coasts of Norway and Greenland and terrorizing mariners and sinking their vessels. Sightings of giant squids contributed to the myths of the Kraken and numerous sailors’ superstitions. From the Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne to the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, the Kraken became part of popular culture and is widely recognised as the eponymous sea beast.
In the Eye of the Kraken video slot, you will follow a group of divers on an expedition to find the riches at the bottom of the ocean guarded by the merciless Kraken, so you’ll need to look the monster in the eye and rely on your wits to get your hands on one of the treasure chests. Play’n GO’s developers outdone themselves with the game’s graphics. The visuals are gorgeous, very artistic and polished while being detailed and appealing. They are also complemented by lovely animations and sound effects.

How it Works
Eye of the Kraken runs on three reels; instead of a standard 5×3 setup, the machine uses a 3×3 grid to house 9 paying lines. All wins pay left to right on the horizontal and diagonal win lines, whereas those that are vertical allow winning formations from top to bottom. Only the highest win per line is paid. As per usual, Scatters are the only symbols that pay on any position, regardless of the predetermined paylines. The control panel is designed to fit the theme and looks like it is part of submarine equipment. Aside from using the Spin button, the player can set the coin value and initiate automatic spins, as well as check the paytable.
All the icons on the reels are theme-inspired. You’ll see boots, harpoons, compasses, oxygen tanks, torpedoes, diving masks and the submarine crew – the captain, his navigator and the vessel engineer. Diving helmets and torpedoes are particularly important, as these symbols will activate special features. Kraken tentacles are Wilds – well, technically the gold Wild icons are substitution icons, but they perform in combination with the tentacles and multiply on the screen. The winnings in the base game are modest, with 30x the bet for three torpedoes on a line as the highest payout.
For a slot machine with only 3 reels, Eye of the Kraken burst with features. For one, there’s the Pattern prize, an instant payout for four matching symbols in the four corners or four sides of the grid. These combinations pay 10x and 5x the bet, respectively.
Wild Kraken tentacles can appear randomly and transform regular icons into Wilds for additional win combos. This feature is followed by a superb animation of the tentacles shaking the reel grid and the tentacles emerging from the deep.
Land 5 or more diving helmet symbols and you’ll unlock the Dive Mode feature. In this bonus round, you’ll receive 9 free spins with the Kraken Eye added to the reels as an extra Wild. During freebies, you can hope to collect special Chest Scatters which deliver a cash prize when the round is over.
The torpedo meter in the bottom right corner will keep track of how many torpedo symbols you’ve collected over the course of the game. The moment the meter hits 0 from 50, the Conquer the Kraken feature will trigger and you’ll have to dive even deeper to a secondary screen to pick among treasure chests held by the Kraken to reveal different prizes.
The volatility of this maritime-themed video slot is medium and the RTP is high enough to spur anyone’s interest. The visual execution is one of the best we’ve seen from Play’n GO and there are great special features incorporated in the game. The free spins come more often than one can manage to collect 50 torpedoes, but the potential is there and bigger wins aren’t unattainable. Don’t expect to earn a fortune with Eye of the Kraken, but this monster isn’t as scary as you think and one of those hidden chests may end up in your lap.
