Intro: Game Theme
Extra Chilli is one of Big Time Gaming’s 2018 releases, bringing some genuine heat into the unseasoned part of the slot world. Many describe Extra Chilli as the obvious sequel to Bonanza. Thematically, it’s not. However, there are too many similarities in how these two sister slots play out to ignore. In all honesty, there’s nothing bad in being compared to Bonanza, as it is arguably one of the best slots in slot history. Back to Extra Chilli – set in a marketplace somewhere in Mexico, the reel grid is shaped as a stand that sells chilli peppers.
You can see chilli and garlic hanging on the side of the reels, so this seems like the perfect place to come and get the basic ingredients for a home-made hot sauce. With mariachi music playing in the background, Extra Chilli is a super-charged slot with an irresistible Mexican feel.
- RTP: 96.82%
- Betting Range: £0.20 – £50
- Max Win: 20,000 times the bet

How it Works
The reel configuration relies on 6 main reels. The number of rows on each reel changes between 2 and 7 and there is an extra row below the grid. In Bonanza, we had the row of carts above the main reels, whereas in Extra Chilli the extra symbols will appear in bowls below the middle reels and increase the winning potential. The maximum number of ways to win can reach 117,649, just like in Bonanza.
The paytable rounds up four high-value peppers in different colours and the usual icons from a playing cards deck posing as low-value symbols. In this case, it’s the symbols from 9 through Ace. Judging by the payout amounts, the purple pepper is the hottest one; it pays 50x, 25x, 10x and 5x the stake for 6, 5, 4 and 3 symbols, respectively. Instead of sticks of dynamite used in Bonanza as the Wild, here we have fireworks. The Scatter is divided among three letters that spell HOT.
Once again, the Megaways mechanic does the job in combination with the symbol-drop engine. The events of winning symbols being removed from the reels and new ones falling from above were referred to as “reactions” in Bonanza. The same thing happens in Extra Chilli. The main bonus round, however, is the Free Spins feature, activated by the Scatter HOT letters. Initially, the player gets 8 free spins. With every additional Scatter that lands, 4 more freebies are added. A Gamble Wheel appears at the beginning of the round, allowing you to gamble for extra free spins, up to 24 in total. You can choose to collect the spins you have and not play the wheel mini-game. The gamble can cause you to lose all the free games, so keep in mind the risk you will be taking if you take the spin.
Furthermore, the free spins come with an increasing multiplier. It has no limits and it gets bigger with each consecutive win.
One other interesting element is used in Extra Chilli – the Feature Drop option. By paying a specific amount you can trigger the Free Spins round without having to wait for the Scatters to deliver. The Feature Drop will cost you 50x the wager.
Big Time Gaming’s Extra Chilli is a feature-rich video slot with a great Mexican theme, slick graphics and dynamic gameplay. It has enough qualities to please various types of players – a wide betting range, a great free spins round, up to 117,649 ways to win, cascades, Wilds and even a Feature Drop options for those who aren’t willing to wait for the bonus to randomly get triggered, as they will rather reach out at grab it for a bit of extra cash.
The unlimited multipliers can also boost your balance up the Scoville scale as you’re waiting for the hottest win worth 20,000 times the bet to land. The volatility is high, therefore be prepared to enter the caliente zone after some less rewarding spins. The only thing that bothered us was the playing cards symbols, as they just break the magic of the theme. Overall, Extra Chilli shows decent upgrades when compared to Bonanza in several aspects, so it is well worth your time. Put on your sombrero and head to the market, can’t you feel your pockets burning?
