Intro: Game Theme
Arthurian legends have remained a popular inspiration for a great deal of writers, artists and developers. These tales have been passed on for generations, and survived the test of time. Microgaming are not the first ones to use them as the basis for their slots. That said, we would be lying if we did not consider Avalon one of the better iterations of Arthurian legends in iGaming. On top of a stellar theme, the developers also added fun special features. We have access to a free spins round and a Gamble bonus.
This is an older title, which originally launched in 2006. That said, the visuals still hold up quite nicely. It will not be able to compete with modern games, but for the year it came out, these graphics are awesome. The animations in particular are what caught our eye. Most of them are smooth and fluid, with maybe one exception. Symbol designs are also done quite well. We are not big fans of the playing card royals, but the rest are quite impressive. When you put the whole package together, you get a release that is just begging to be played!

How it Works
You play Avalon on a five-reel board with twenty paylines. Individual paylines cannot be turned on or off. To win, players need to find three or more matching icons next to one another. All winning combinations must start with the leftmost reel and have to follow an active payline to grant a cash prize. The user interface has been updated, and is now equally usable on both desktop and mobile devices. You can spin the reels, set up Auto Play, change your bet and turn turbo mode on or off. Click on the three lines to access the settings page, the paytable or the help menu. The bet menu allows you to directly choose a wager, or use a slider to set it to a value that suits you. You can bet between £0.20 and £200 on every spin.
For the most part, we love the symbol designs Microgaming has created. The only ones that are not quite up to standard are the playing card royals. They look okay, but share some generic design elements we have seen elsewhere. The developer can do better, and we can see that in the other available icons. Silver goblets, golden broches, a coat of arms and a huge crown are all higher value symbols! The island of Avalon is the Wild, while a sealed chest is a bonus icon. Finally, the lade of the lake who guards the sword Excalibur serves as the Scatter.
In order to win free spins, you need to land at least three Scatters. This will grant you twelve free spins and a cash prize. The more Scatters you have, the bigger the initial payout will be. Two, three, four or five Scatters grant a 2x, 4x, 20x and 200x cash prize, respectively. It is possible to retrigger the free spins round by finding three or more Scatters during the special feature. This would grant you twelve extra turns. While the twelve free spins are being played, a 7x multiplier is active. This applies to all winning combinations on the playing field. However, once the free spins bonus expires, so does the multiplier.
Wilds can appear on any reel, and are able to substitute for any symbol except for the Wild. During free spins, the chest icon temporarily becomes another Wild. This gives you an increased chance to score prizes. One thing to keep in mind is that neither Wild are enhanced with multipliers or other bonuses. They can only replace other symbols and grant a cash prize of their own if you are lucky.
Punters also have access to the Gamble bonus. After a qualifying win, you can choose to gamble your winnings by predicting the colour or suit of a facedown card. Guessing the colour correctly doubles your win, while predicting the suit quadruples the payout. However, if you get it wrong, you lose your initial win.
This slot first charmed players long ago. The fact it has kept such a loyal audience all these years later just goes to show how impressive this title is! The special features are nothing amazing, but the awesome winning potential they bring is hard to pass up. If you have not had the pleasure of trying it yet, you definitely need to check it out!
